This may seem like a bit of a cheat, or worse yet, defeating the purpose of this poll, but in preparing my list I disqualified an additional 25 canonical works that I felt confident were already acknowledged as such. Had I not, 25 titles from my list above would have to be eliminated to accommodate the following:

STEAMBOAT BILL, JR. (1928) Buster Keaton

MOROCCO (1930) Josef von Sternberg

LA CHIENNE (1931) Jean Renoir

I WAS BORN, BUT... (1932) Ozu Yasujiro

SHANGHAI EXPRESS (1932) Josef von Sternberg

THE TESTAMENT OF DR. MABUSE (1933) Fritz Lang

THE CRIME OF M. LANGE (1936) Jean Renoir

SWING TIME (1937) George Stevens

ONLY ANGELS HAVE WINGS (1939) Howard Hawks

YOUNG MR. LINCOLN (1939) John Ford

I WALKED WITH A ZOMBIE (1943) Jacques Tourneur

THE PALM BEACH STORY (1943) Preston Sturges

TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT (1944) Howard Hawks

FORT APACHE (1948) John Ford

SHE WORE A YELLOW RIBBON (1949) John Ford

EARLY SUMMER (1951) Ozu Yasujiro

THE BAND WAGON (1953) Vincente Minnelli

THE BIG HEAT (1953) Fritz Lang

GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES (1953) Howard Hawks

ANATOMY OF A MURDER (1959) Otto Preminger

AN AUTUMN AFTERNOON (1962) Ozu Yasujiro

THE BITTER TERAS OF PETRA VON KANT (1972) Rainer Werner Fassbinder
